Top Ten Tuesday -- Favorite Authors

Top Ten Tuesday is an original feature/weekly meme created  at The Broke and the Bookish.  This week's question is to list your top 10 favorite authors.

My top 10, in no particular order, along with my favorite work of each, are:
  • Margaret Atwood  (The Handmaid's Tale)
  • Jennifer Weiner    (Good in Bed)
  • Andrea Levy         (Small Island)
  • Rohinton Mistry    (A Fine Balance)
  • Bill Bryson           (Neither Here nor There:  Travels in Europe)
  • Sophie Kinsella    (Twenties Girl)
  • A.J. Jacobs       (The Guinea Pig Diaries)
  • Khaled Hosseini  (The Kite Runner)
  • Nick Hornby    (How to be Good)
  • Kate Atkinson  (Case Histories)
The list seems to change periodically, though, as I discover new and new-to-me writers.

  1. Margaret Atwood is wonderful! I need about a top 30 (or 50 or..) list!

  2. Loved the Handmaid's Tale. Atwood is definitely on my list. Khaled Hosseini is on my list too, but for A Thousand Splendid Suns; I haven't read The Kite Runner yet. I've read a few authors on your list, but not the books you've mentioned.

  3. Haha, the first two on your list seem to be dramatic opposites! That's cool though, I'm the same way - my taste is all over the place. I think that's a good thing though :)

  4. Twenties Girl has been on my TBR for forever -- I need to read it since Kinsella made your top ten!

  5. Great list :o) I have Good in Bed on a TBR pile. Liked In Her Shoes by the same author (the movies was even better!). I defintiely need to read Margaret Atwood in my lifetime.

  6. I added Bill Brayson too. He makes everything he writes about interesting and funny. I also think that Kahled Hosseini is amazing.

  7. Neither Here Nor There is one of my favorite books. Excellent list :)

  8. I just finished Andrea Levy's The Long Song, and loved it! I imagine Small Island is just as moving.

  9. Bev -- it is so hard to pick just 10 favorite authors isn't it?
Loni -- I also loved A Thousand Splendid Suns, I can't wait to see what he writes next.
IngridLola -- yeah, I have - shall we say - eclectic tastes!
Audra -- Twenties Girl is a wonderful story. I wasn't too thrilled with some of Kinsella's other non-Shopaholic books, but this one was great. You should definitely check it out.
Teacher/Learner -- I liked In Her Shoes (book and movie) as well. Those two were probably her best books in my opinion.
Anne -- Bill Bryson & Khaled Hosseini again seem to be polar opposites but I like them both.
Red -- I couldn't decide between that one or Notes from a Small Island, or In a Sunburned Country. He could travel pretty much anywhere and write about it and I would read it.
Beth -- Definitely check out Small Island. I thought The Long Song was ok, but Small Island is (in my opinion) a much better story.

  10. Good list of authors, Suzanne. I'm familiar with most, and have read some. This was a tough list for me to put together, as I had to think long and hard. I surmise that my list of 'favorite authors' will always be in a state of flux too.

Your recent review of "A Novel Bookstore" was intriguing too. I have always had a 'thing' for books about books (fiction and non-fiction). Keep up the good work! Cheers! Chris

What do you think? Good or bad, I'd love to hear from you (but be nice - I'm sensitive!)
